In this day and age social media paints an elaborate picture that skinny is normal, fat is atrocious, and anyone in between needs to pick a side because they are perplexed. When it comes to your physical appearance, you tend to understand at a young age that you want to have the personal security of “fitting in” rather than have the scrutiny of being considered different and “standing out”. As you grow older you are more aware of the consequences of trying to fit in because internally you are consumed in trying to deal with your self-esteem on a daily basis. You try to formulate a solution to why you are battling with yourself in the first place by trying to comprehend if you’re dissatisfied with your body because of life insecurities or if you are dissatisfied because society has created those insecurities for you. You end up living with an internal battle of “am I too skinny to be fat, too fat to be skinny, or am I just simply in the middle?”.
I consider myself curvy and plus size because I find those terms to be more relatable, but like all new things there are cracks that can be filled and made your own. Eventually, you grow into the person that you are proud of because you no longer care about what other people think of your shape or size. It is your body, your life and you should own it because it is beautiful and authentically yours. If you own it, it will create a movement with you, one that you will share with others to inspire them to tear down their own insecurities. That is why I provide beautiful pieces to accentuate your curves and build your confidence. I want people to understand and realize that they are beautiful, and that society has installed those insecurities within us.
The internal battle to figure out where you stand will always be ongoing. This change is not an overnight process. So asking yourself questions like these are an important part of the process of staying happy on the inside as well as on the outside. Also, remember that it’s not always going to be rainbows, sunshine and flowers, but it is all a part of the process and it is okay to have mixed emotions. The end result and goal should be to deal with your self-esteem in a more positive way and love the shape that you are in. Take a look at our previous blog post “Sizeism; A bias of the modern world” to understand more of the challenges that are faced when you are considered thick, curvy or plus size.
